Little known fact: EVs will worsen plastic and chemical pollution in the world's oceans
⬇️ Here's how ⬇️
Car tires and brakes are major sources of pollutants that are poisoning fish & littering the ocean with microplastics. The average tire loses 4kg of mass as microparticle pollution before being trashed. Brakes contribute more to "road grime." Research shows the compounds in this pollution are exceptionally toxic to aquatic life.
Tires and brakes are the #2 source of microplastics in the oceans — only behind synthetic (plastic) textiles such as polyester, nylon, etc.
EVs will make this problem worse. EVs are substantially heavier than gas-powered vehicles because of the battery weight. This creates more tire and brake wear and thus more microplastic (and potentially nanoplastic) pollution.
Cars are an environmental disaster no matter what is under the hood. This is why I call EVs a false "solution." They trick us into believing car culture can be made sustainable. It can't.
