In my free 2018 e-book, "Stress R Us", I suggest that indigenous people can lead the way back to a right relationship to the natural world, and these brave Native Americans are demonstrating that relationship with considerable sacrifice for themselves. I pray for them and ask others to do the same. I'm a frail 79yo LONG COVID and prostate cancer survivor, but in my younger days I travelled our beautiful country, including the Far West. The most powerful spiritual experience of my life was at a Odawa powwow in Michigan that I can still remember like it was yesterday. We "modern" urban/suburban Americans are so very alienated from Nature and Her wonders that chronic stress is all most of us have known, and it's killing us. Have a blessed day! Gregg Miklashek, MD

grateful for you sharing this here on substack. native mama and writer over here, resonating with the love of plants and disgust with open pit mining. will share with relatives.
Very interesting that I come across this story as I'm researching the effects of a proposed open pit mine in my home province. The article I write will be inspired by stories of resistance such as this one
The Grassy Mountain mine in the Eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies.
It was previously rejected by our provincial government on account of open pit mining being a proven polluter of water systems. And there being no proven method of preventing selenium fallout.
The land east of the Rockies is heavily irrigated and utterly reliant on the watershed that originates at the site of the mine.
I'd love to hear more about the struggle against this mine and lend some support from afar. I have some experience in these things that I'd be happy to share, although there is never a silver bullet. Feel free to reach out directly: https://www.maxwilbert.org/contact/
As a life time tree hugger, I have recently come to realize that the companies we have protested for the environmental destruction they cause have only moved their operations to different parts of the world where citizens are not so outspoken. If they can’t build a lithium plant here, they will find somewhere else to build it. The problem is that so many have bought into The Green Deal and aren’t looking at all the costs. If we insist on our electric vehicles, then we must pay the price of the destruction they cause instead of shipping it out to destroy another country’s land. Boycott electric cars and the New Green Deal and then this mining will stop.
To say that you are in favor of electric vehicles and against mining in the US, is the reason our earth is under such a strain.
Hey Camila! I completely agree with the first thing you said. It's true, companies often outsource destructive industries and projects overseas to more favorable locations when they face serious pushback. My conclusion from this is that we need globalized resistance, that we need to strategically undermine the power of these transnationals and their client states to operate unhindered *anywhere.* And while I think responsible personal choices are very important — I make these choices myself, living in a small home in the woods, buying minimal things, living simply, foraging wild foods, etc. — I don't think boycotts are very effective as a political tactic. The reason is the same as above: these industries are globalized. Population growth is about 1 million per week. There are lots of consumers willing to buy, buy, buy. In short, I think these are largely social and political issues, not individual issues. And so, I think the solutions will be largely social and political, too.
Hmmmmmm…… where is Saint Elon Musk in condemning this sort of land grab and environmental destruction and biopiracy for lithium? He’s certainly not busy helping out the victims of Hurricane Helene who are ALSO being genocided so he can “reduce the government cost and waste” associated with helping himself to THEIR land and heritage to enrich himself!!!
It’s all such a self-serving lie. Saint Trump, Savior of the People, might point all this out. If he weren’t totally about the money and power, himself.
Count me out of ever being interested in an electric vehicle or anything else that uses lithium. I stand with my people, and the plants and animals everywhere, too.
Breaking treaties: the US government’s approach to trying to steal more from Native Americans than they already have. No honor of any kind. No regard for Great Spirit.
The thirst for resources will never end till we do. The whole world wants the living standard of the developed nations and it is entirely impossible environmentally

There is a lot of wisdom in the old ways. Blessings to you, too, Greeley!

Thank you so much, Superball. It's a beautiful and special place out there.
See my post for ways we can all do more using what we already have paid for via taxes & in order to communicate in our personal & professional lives.
We need to activate the professionals who are Native Americans or honor the Spiritual nature of life.

Thank you so much 🙏🏼
thanks, Max, for carrying on the fight. excellent presentation.
Thanks, Marie!
Great story. The let them take too much strategy always works but it takes a long time! Ropeadope!
I sure hope it does, Stephen, but there's hell to pay in the meantime...
Wonderful article. Thank you!
Thank you very much, Hart!

I’m glad, Kitty! What’s the project you’re researching?

It's playing with fire

Love her resistance posture.
As a generality, We the People must end the ceding of rights to corporations we ourselves don't possess on an individual level!
May the four winds blow her to success.
Definitely. Thank you so much for the support.
You are more than welcome! I cannot think of a more worthy cause.
Thanks for keeping this alive.
Thank you for helping, Michael.

Absolutely, Gary.
I've added a voiceover to this post, so you can now listen if you prefer audio. It will also be published on The Green Flame podcast.
